Barbados Jazz Festival

This annual event brings together top billed performers from the U.S.A., Canada, UK, Latin America and the Caribbean with the best of Barbadian artists in an entertainment package that attracts much international attention. Top performers have included Poncho Sanchez, Fourplay, Hiroshima, Errol Bradshaw, Herbie Hancock, Dionne Warwick, Freddy Cole, Jesse Cook, David Sanborn, Rachelle Ferrell and the Cuban band Orquesta Enrique Jorrin. R and B performer Alicia Keys is scheduled to play in 2005, the tenth anniversary of the event.

Held the second week of January, the seven-day event is staged at various venues including the modern Sir Garfield Sobers Sports complex, the historic Sunbury Plantation House and the open-air venue of Farley Hill National Park. The two-day outdoor concert at Farley Hill Park is an especially popular element of the festival as fans bring coolers of drinks, food and blankets to stretch out on the shaded slope as they watch the show.

The Sherbourne Conference Centre is another open-air venue and stages performances on the lawn. The place is timelessly romantic and has featured African chanting and Yoruba music in past years.

The Barbados Jazz Festival has reached music lovers island-wide. The indoor Sir Garfield Sobers Sports complex holds 3,000 people. The Cane Pit Amphitheatre at the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Heritage Park is also a popular draw with with its wonderfully clear view of the Caribbean's bright night time sky.

Widely acclaimed as the premier jazz festival of the Caribbean, you won't want to miss "paint it jazz"!

What a voice! What an endeering persona! What great songs!

I know the $100.00 US (actually the $200.00US since I was fortunate enuff to have date for the night) will be sorely missed BUT I think in this case it was money well spent. Don't ask me to rationalise paying that sort of money for 1hr 20 mins of entertainment. I can't ( and I can't rationalise paying more than $20 for movies or $7 for chefette chicken FLAVOURED roti etc etc). BUT I really enjoyed Anita and her beautiful voice last Friday.

I saw a grown man cry when she started to sing .."You bring me joy" I saw people clutching their chest and squeezing their love oned hands as each hit rolled of her tongue...

This was mature musical enterainment at its best. This was a show not to be missed....

I did not go myself - price was too steep fuh me - although I was fortunate to witness a performance of hers in a US city some years ago which I enjoyed. Your assessment is interesting because I spoke to a CEO of a company who attended and who expressed disgust at the standard of the show...go figure rolleyes.gif

to each his own

maybe the man was bawling because of the price of the ticket LOL clapping.gif

The show started late approximately 50 mins late but by then the gym was full with a nice mix of people (the majority of whom seemed above 22). When Anita came on I said to my date "she had better perform because not only is she expensive but she late too..."

But by the time she started SWEET LOVE my empty pockets and my impatience were forgotten. The woman has a magical voice that is RICH and deep and strong and commanding! At one point she started to sing acappella to what everyone has assumed was the start of a song but which she later reveled was her stretching her chords...it was beautiful!

I liked how she interacted with the crowd and the complaint that she talked too much and did not sing enough for the money I can't agree with because her talk and her singing were complimentary.

Perhaps i am an Anita Baker 'STAN' but in the context of what we get offered here in Barbados in terms of quality singers I think stands way above the others.

IMHO
She performed better than Alicia keys, Patty Labelle, India Arie and even Jill Scott ( who I love). Luther was awesome of course!

That is what I call HOT!

2nd thing, you say she was better than Jill Scott?!!!
It takes a lot to be better than Jill. So that means she had to be real tight!

Glad 2 hear Q4 ... I've seen her a couple of times and I am not that big a fan of hers - but she is good no doubt about it.

Better than Alicia - wow? .... I suppose the venue and the audience do play a part - 1st time I saw Ms Baker in the UK she was booed off stage - she jus stood and sang and gave no performance ... second time i saw her in a more intimate venue she was very good.

But if i was in Barbados I would've been there for sure!

"This jazz thing has become rather a forum for the elite."

I was going to ignore this and maybe i should but what a load of CRAP! If it is for the elite then so are all the Bashment shows , so is alot of Bajan day to day life bECAUSE Life in Barbados is expensive the last time I checked.

The crowd in the mud at Farley Hill comprised of trhe USUAL mix of all the classes of bajans and i know this is true since I know alot of people! big_boss.gif rolleyes.gif

Even th said Anita Baker show had all sorts of people there ( I don't know if dey teef to get there but if dey did dey teef alot because not only did dey pay fuh the ticket tdey also went out and buy new clothes).

In addition Jazz events including theafter jazz limes vary in costs so IF YOU ARE TRULY INTO JAZZ, R&B and such you can participate as you wish.

several of my friends who could easily afford to go refuse to go to Anita on principle because of the price and more importantly because they were not huge fans. We all make decisions about what is important to us in terms of the price we are willing to pay each and everyday but they is nothing elitist about that!

some of us would rather pay $1000.00 to fly to NYC and see her perform at $50 US and then says we saving money!

I look at it this way: She's older and she probably just doesn't make the time (anymore) to practice her scales, etc... Plus, she never really had pitch issues in the past; could also be an "acapella" thing. Maybe she feels more secure when she's backed by instruments. I mean, singin' acapella must be so hard anyway, but in a freakin' gymnasium with all those echoes and other noise. She DOES SOUND like she's got a matzah ball in her mouf tho. Other than that, anthems or big power ballads, she should DEFINITELY not touch. Stick 2 what she does best, which is...ahmmm...ahmmm...??? Myself, I can take or leave her. Usually, I just leave her unless it's the hits or "Been So Long." That last "hit" she had was laughable. The lyrics were too cliche/too corny. I guess that sells too though.
