      Internet Scams and BarbadosForum

Recently there have been an increase in online scams. In almost all online communities one will find that most users are generally nice people but, as in any community, one can also expect to find that there are unscrupulous persons who will try to conduct their trade behind the shadow of anonymity that the internet provides. For a while people have been going crazy over Facebook and for as long as it has existed I still do not get why people like it so much. I thought my view wasn't really shared until a friend agreed with me. However I would still like to know why the stupid thing is so popular.

I guess like all fads its popularity will soon wane. Give it time Ric. Where they find the time for this stuff is my question.

Facebook is a scocial network site. It is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find old schoolmates from secondary school and university or other groups (ALL OVEr THE WORLD) For example there is a HC group for those who attended in the 80's that has members posting from all over!

It also allows you to keep others up to date on what going on...very good for publicsing parties, cultural evenst and so on. Indeed I joined a bajan online group called restuarant comoisseurs which have frequent get togethers at local restaurants ( and offer HONEST critiques of these establishments). It can be abused in that not everyone remembers to put the privacy controls in place so that some photos etc of you may become visible to the wrong person. In fact I think one guy in the US who called in sick to work had a picture of him partying on his facebook ( or was it myspace) page and subsequently lost his job.

And with all the applications it can lead to alot of wasted time...

I like it noetheless!

I too like facebook!

Since being on facebook, I've come back in touch with people that I went to primary school with and haven't seen since. People that I haven't seen since I left secondary school. Some of these people I would never have encountered again otherwise.

I belong to the HC group that q speaks of. It's good to hear some of the stories and discussions that take place in there.

I also belong to that restaurants group but can't attend any events as I am 'ova in away'.

I even got some of the timewasting apps (which reminds me I have to go and feed my fluff friend).

You can share photos with friends etc.

The list goes on.

I like Facebook as well. Like S3, i have hooked up with people I haven't seen in years and I think that's great. Many of them live overseas as I do and quite a few are still in Bim. I have a few timewasting appplications also. My fave is Puzzle Bee.

Snoop, don't do it! The next thing you will also be "addicted" to Facebook.

I guess I knew why people went but at the same time I still did not understand. I am thinking that sooner or later I will just be bored interacting with people at that level. It must be extremely difficult keeping those types of relationships going for any length of time. I find with applications like msn, yahoo messenger etc it is far easier. You put your contacts there and you can access whenever you feel to. Facebook is just so much more work.

Ric, don't worry. My personality wouldn't allow for that. The puzzles would interest me, but I was never big on cultivating a lot of Internet relationships. I tend to do one thing and stick with it.

MSN and yahoo messenger is good for the people who you are already in contact with.

But almost daily I but up pun people on facebook that have not even crossed my mind in 15 years. And it's good to see where they are and what they're doing.

And then there are those that are more recent 'friends' who I don't really have conversations with so msn or yahoo would be useless. But with facebook, I can add a lil 'howdy' message to their wall, or 'superpoke' them to keep the connection alive.

So for me facebook serves a purpose. But that may not be the case for everyone.

Puzzle Bee? Now I'm interested. Tell me more. I've never been on Facebook.

It is a jigsaw puzzle application. You get a daily puzzle challenge or you can search puzzles and do as many as you like. They come in easy, medium or difficult levels. For each puzzle you complete you get points (honey) and you can upgrade your application with the points you earn to get things such as full screen etc. You can also make your own pictures into puzzles and challenge others to complete them. It's great!

Not quite the puzzles I had in mind, but thanks anyway. Ric, looks like I'm safe. :D

Stop it! Stop it, you lot of FB addicts! The idea here is not to discover new ways of being pulled in by the thing but to determine why you are...I guess it's not helping.

Why am I pulled in by Facebook? Hmmm, I don't think I am actually. I tend to visit it if I get a notification in my email that some one has posted or similar but otherwise don't spend heaps of time there. I do do a puzzle from time to time but much less recently. There are a lot of foolish applications that are a waste of time and I delete many requests that people send me.

I spend most of my time online reading the news on BBC and The Nation, reading Bajan blogs, email, looking up things that I want to find out more about and of course, checking in here.

Facebook serves it's purpose just like this forum does.

I was recently invited to Facebook by those organizing next year's Kolij reunion. So far it's great since we get to meet up with former classmates before the big event, which I think will be more fun due to these re-connections. I've even started to talk to one or two people who I would never have approached at a reunion since we had no former ties. So Facebook has served a purpose. I also found an old friend I haven't seen in 18 years and we've started emailing again. Not to mention I've reconnected with two of my former professors.

The Kolij group s3 and Q mentioned are now having quarterly limes and, from the posted pictures, it looks like people are having fun. It's been fun to see old pictures from our school days as well as new ones.

You're able to meet people with similar interests, causes etc. (a bit like a virtual club), get book and movie reviews or compare your movie tastes with friends. You can also upload articles/videos/photos, all of which friends can comment on.

Overall, I don't spend any more time there than on here, but I am able to quickly stay in touch with friends and acquaintances as close as the town I'm in or as far away as China, without spending the kind of time required for an IM, email or phone call. Sending virtual flowers, gifts, hugs or a poke ever so often is enough to maintain the connection until I can get to an email/call. I can also keep everyone updated on what's going on with me with a single post or comment. The best part: I have total control on who my friends/acquaintances are and who accesses my profile page. I'm no social butterfly and my list of friends stays small, just the way I like it.

Q and sugar plum, all 3 of we in the same kolij group but I can't make a link between the people in here and the people on facebook. Here we use aliases and on facebook (most people) use their real names.

Isn't that strange indeed?
